THE BIRMINGHAM BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ UNION
Charity Number 1120499
The Birmingham Boys’ and Girls’ Union is a registered charity which currently provides outdoor activities at Woodlands Adventure & Outdoor Learning, Aldridge, for young people of all ages and backgrounds principally from the West Midlands. Through its work the organisation provides a vital facility and service for some 14000 children a year, of whom many are deprived or with special needs. Some 100 Years old, the BBGUs’ development has necessarily been such to reflect the vast social changes of the 20th Century. But whilst the nature of the Union’s work has altered, it remains close to its original objectives (repeated in Union trust deeds of 1967) “to help and educate young people in the area to develop their physical and mental capacities”
WOODLANDS ADVENTURE & OUTDOOR LEARNING
Woodlands Adventure is a residential outdoor activity centre offering archery, canoeing, climbing. abseiling, assault course, orienteering, team building and high ropes course to groups of young people from the West Midlands area. Priority is given to disadvantaged and/or disabled groups and we cater for many of these each year; groups such as Birmingham Institute for the Deaf, Visiting Teacher Services for both the hearing and visually impaired from Birmingham and Walsall areas and special schools from Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell, Tamworth and Wolverhampton. We give priority to schools from inner city areas with high numbers of disadvantaged children. It is our policy to do everything possible to assist disadvantaged groups encountering difficulties. All our staff have been trained to cater for the needs of disabled youngsters and we have special equipment so that even severely disabled youngsters can take part in, and enjoy, our activities.
